new monitors are amazing!

 

 

I used to use large monitors, but the new small ones are impressing me. The alienware oled on the right is 27 inches, and 2k in resolution. the center screen is 14 inches, and full 4k.

the left screen is 2k, but 10 inches.  All 3 are oleds, but the smaller ones do not have the well known fuzzy text problem that comes from a different layout of color pixels. The dots are just too small, so the fuzzy halo around text charactors is too small to see. 

 

On the 4k screen in particular, images fool the eye because no pixelization can be detected in movies and photos. On the old 27 inch screen, you can always see the pixels. they are large. So, my ideas about monitors is changing. i prefer using 2 tiny high resolution monitors for complicated tasks. In this case, both small screens refresh at 60 hz, while the big screen is 360 hz, so it is clear that the big one is optimized for all out gaming. It goes the other direction, presenting motion so realistically that the mind is fooled, and the gamer seems to be present in the scene. I notice that a 19 inch 144 hz portable oled is now available.

 

One would imagine that these fairly inexpensive oled screens would have really bad build quality, but the 2 that i recieved both rest in perfectly machined aluminum. Instead of needing a special power supply, they run on any usb c charger or any usb port on a computer. if you have usb 4, the image and the power come over the one usb c cord. So, the portables are better in many ways than the big plastic screens. The tiny arm needed to hold the portables is very inexpensive, and the whole arrangement is so light that you can unclip it from the table and clip it somewhere else without removing the screen.

 

In the lower image, you can see the difference in bulk of the 3 different arms, and the way that they can be arranged in many different ways depending on need. I actually brought the tiny screen over to meet with the other 2, but it is attached to a tiny low wattage computer that runs almost 24/7, so it is actually used at a different station with separate mouse and keyboard.
